What to Pack for a 4x4 Adventure in Southern Africa

On a guided tour the organiser handles routing, bookings and support. Your job is to arrive with a vehicle and a kit list that will not slow the convoy down.

Vehicle and recovery

Sort the vehicle first. Everything else is comfort.

  • Full-size spare, working jack and wheel spanner
  • Tyre pressure gauge and compressor for sand sections
  • Recovery strap and rated recovery points
  • Basic spares and tools for your specific vehicle
  • Dual battery or power bank for fridge and devices

Cross-border documents

Border requirements change. Confirm the current requirements with the organiser and the relevant authorities before departure.

  • Passport valid well beyond the travel dates
  • Vehicle registration papers and, if financed, a letter of authority
  • Driver's licence and required vehicle identification
  • Travel and vehicle insurance covering the countries on the route

Camp and personal kit

Pack in soft bags rather than hard cases — they fit the gaps a packed vehicle leaves you.

  • Layered clothing for cold mornings and hot afternoons
  • Headlamp, power cables and a compact first aid kit
  • Water storage and a refillable bottle
  • Camp chair, bedding and a sun hat

Something is coming. Be part of it.
